Arsenal and Manchester United lock horns in race for Bundesliga megastar
Manchester United and Arsenal are all set to do battle next summer as the race heats up for Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus.
The German winger has been a wanted man in Europe for a number of years now, but has remained loyal to Dortmund through some tough times, though the club have also stood by him as he has battled some big injuries in his career, including one which saw him miss Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil.
According to The Sun, Reus is a target for two Premier League clubs, with Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho going head to head for his signature. With Reus’ international teammate Mesut Ozil out of contract at Arsenal in the summer, and his former Dortmund compatriot Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggling for form once again with the Red Devils, it is easy to see why both clubs are so keen to add his creativity and width to their respective squads.
The article suggests they may have trouble persuading Reus to leave Dortmund as he once again appears committed to the cause at the Signal Iduna Park. With the club well in the Bundesliga title race alongside long time rivals Bayern Munich, Reus looks set to pen a new contract. Dortmund are going strong under former Ajax coach Peter Bosz, having kept another man in demand, striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, over the summer.
But that doesn’t seem to have put either Arsenal or United off. Both clubs are looking to recapture their form of yesteryear and see Reus as a key part of that charge. For Mourinho and United, it is a question of winning the Premier League title for the first time since 2013, but for Arsenal it is a need to return to the Champions League having missed out for the first time in Wenger’s 21-year reign last season.
A crucial period is approaching for both clubs, but the pressure appears to be much more on Arsenal’s shoulders with the impending departures of both Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, who is also out of contract next summer. Signing Reus would most certainly soften the blow of them leaving.
