Arsenal line-up stunning move to sign Man United star as replacement for their best player
Arsenal could be set to make a sensational swoop for Manchester United youngster Anthony Martial as they look to replace star man and contract rebel Alexis Sanchez.
Sanchez, 28, looks set to depart the Emirates Stadium on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract expires. He is free to discuss a pre-contract with any club in January and was reportedly close to a deadline day switch to Manchester City, which would have seen him link up with his former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
But everything fell through because the Gunners could not fill the void he would be leaving. They had agreed a £92million fee with Monaco for 21-year-old midfielder Thomas Lemar, but the France international failed to agree terms. According to the Mirror, Arsene Wenger will turn his attention to his fellow countryman Martial, who has seen his career flounder since Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford last year.
His initial impact, upon his £36million move from Monaco in 2015, a record deal for a teenager at the time, was sublime. He was a real star under Louis van Gaal, but has lost his way since Mourinho signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku, reducing his opportunities as a central striker.
With Alexandre Lacazette up front for the Gunners, he may not get the chances he would want in North London. Yet, he would be one of if not the star man if he were to play under Wenger, who is a huge fan of the United man. After failing to lure Kylian Mbappe to the club on two occasions, he may well turn to another billed as the heir to one of his former prodigies, Thierry Henry.
It seems as though Wenger has lost hope of keeping Sanchez and Mesut Özil at the club, with the German’s contract running out at the same time. No new offers are likely to be forthcoming, and existing offers have been rejected out of hand to date. Mourinho may look to lure either or both to Old Trafford, having previously signed Özil for Real Madrid.
Sanchez may get his original wish of a move to Manchester City, with Guardiola spoilt for choice in attack as it is. Arsenal are believed to have attempted to engineer swap deals involving Sergio Agüero and Raheem Sterling, both of whom have been in such good form this season, and they may look to do the same with Martial.
