Who needs Zlatan, when you’ve got Asano…

That is the view of very few disgruntled Arsenal fans, after the North London side confirmed they have struck a deal to sign Japanese striker Takuma Asano from J-League club Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

The 21-year-old made his international debut in August last year and has made five appearances for the national side. The forward is also expected to be named in Japan’s squad for the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.

Arsene Wenger Article Edit

Asano, whose transfer is subject to a medical, is expected to train with the first‑team squad. He becomes the third Japanese player to play under Wenger at Arsenal, following in the footsteps of  midfielders Junichi Inamoto and Ryo Miyaichi. He joins Granit Xhaka in signing for Arsenal this summer.

Whilst the signing of the 21-year-old may turn out to be a pretty shrewd acquisition from Arsene Wenger, this transfer isn’t quite what Gunners fans were expecting in terms of a signing a big-name striker this summer.

It is well known that the Gunners are in need of more fire power to challenge for major honours next season, and the North Londoners have been linked with a number of frontmen in the last few months. Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata have all been rumoured targets with Leicester’s Jamie Vardy snubbing a move to the Emirates earlier this month.

Whilst it is still very early in this summer’s transfer window, Arsenal fans are already in panic mode, and judging by the reaction on Twitter, supporters are praying that their manager hasn’t decided to settle for Olivier Giroud and a relatively unknown youngster to lead the line next season.

It seems that Arsenal fans are also not happy with the timing of the announcement, revealing a relatively unknown youngster on the same week that Manchester United confirmed the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Liverpool confirmed the signing of Sadio Mane, and Chelsea completed a deal for Belgian sensation Michy Batshuayi.
