Arsene Wenger is apparently in secret talks to sign Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi in a deal that could be completed in January.
The North London side are ready to stump up a club record £44m fee for the 23-year-old and the Argentine is keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium, where he will receive a big pay-rise.
Icardi impressed as a youth player at Barcelona before moving to Sampdoria ahead of his 2013 transfer to the San Siro and the cultured forward has continued to mature into one of the hottest young attackers in world football.
In 2014/15 Icardi racked up 22 Serie A goals and managed 16 last time around and has already netted six times thus far this season.
Inter Milan have experienced a number of lean seasons of late and have once again failed to secure Champions League action and this could be further motivation for Icardi to seek a fresh challenge.
Arsene Wenger brought in Lucas Perez in a late transfer window move, from Deportivo La Coruna, but is seen more as an alternative option than a regular first-team starter.
Olivier Giroud has struggled to get a foothold back in the Arsenal’s first team set-up after Euro 2016 and seems likely to be offloaded if Icardi is brought in.
