Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Denis Suarez from Barcelona after positive talks with the Spain international, according to the Daily Mirror. The Gunners are in the market for a new midfielder and the report suggests that Suarez is manager Unai Emery’s number one target.
He had previously stated that Arsenal will only be in the market for loans during the January transfer window. Suarez could fit that bill as he looks for a quick getaway from Camp Nou with more regular first team football his priority.
A temporary switch could be seen as an audition for replacing Aaron Ramsey at the Emirates Stadium, with the Welshman widely expected to join Juventus at the end of the season after his. contract expires.
Suarez is keen to return to English football, having spent two years at Manchester City earlier in his career. He would face competition from the likes of summer signings Mateo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira, but he may just have the skillet to jump to the top of the pecking order. He has a great passing range and can keep the tempo of a match very well.
He has found first team football tough to come by in Cataluña, making just two league appearances for the Spanish champions this season. That is understandable considering the likes of Arthur, Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets ahead of him in the pecking order of Ernesto Valverde’s side.
In other Arsenal news, they have been linked with a move for James Rodriguez. The Colombian is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Real Madrid, meaning any desk to take him to North London could have serious complications. The article suggests the Gunners could look to subsidise some of record signing Mesut Özil’s wages in order to get him out of the club.

Emery clearly doesn’t fancy him and seems willing to let him go on loan or a permanent deal. Serious change appears to be in the air, but signing Suarez could be a really positive move ahead of a real push for Champions League football next season.
