Antonio Conte was afraid of two key Liverpool players apparently

Chelsea may have got a point in their away game against Liverpool, but apparently the Blues were so worried about two of the Liverpool stars that they may have cost themselves points.

That’s according to Paul Mariner, who thinks that Antonio Conte was worried about Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane starting the game – and set his side up to be more defensive than many were expecting, and that gave Liverpool the chance to come at the Blues, who then had to rely on a late equaliser.

While a point at Anfield can never be considered bad, the fact of the matter is both Chelsea and Liverpool knew they had to win the game in order to keep pace with Manchester City – and both failed to do so, splitting the spoils and handing a bigger advantage to Pep Guardiola’s men.

“I think that you could see with the way that Antonio Conte set his team up,” Mariner said.

“He had the three at the back and five in the middle of the park and then Hazard just off Morata.

“So that’s slightly unusual for him, so he was a little bit afraid of possibly Firmino and Mane starting which they didn’t do.

“As the game progressed I thought there was a lot of ebb and flow to the game, I actually enjoyed it.

“Liverpool came on strong and all of a sudden Chelsea would have their moments. I enjoyed it.”
