The Sun Bets Stayers' Hurdle Betting Tips & Odds 2018
15.30 The Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle
From Baracouda to Big Bucks, from Inglis Drever to Iris’s Gift, the Stayers Hurdle race is third of four main Championship Cheltenham races and determines which horse is the very best hurdler over an extended three mile trip.
The excellent Nichols Canyon won in 2017, but sadly lost his life in a recent trial race, which leaves a rather unexpected horse at the top of the Stayers Hurdle betting market for this Grade 1 contest, sponsored this year by Sun Bets.
As usual, it is shaping up to be another memorable race!
Cheltenham Day 4 Betting Offers
Stayers’ Hurdle Betting Tip: Sam Spinner worth an each-way Cheltenham bet
The Stayers’ Hurdle, showcase race of Day 3 at the Cheltenham Festival, is the most open of the four main Championship Cheltenham races.
The three mile classic hurdle race has been won by some fantastic champions like multiple winners Baracouda, Inglis Drever and Big Bucks but no such outstanding horse appears to be in this year’s line-up …at this point!
Unlike 2014 when the lightly raced More of That and 2016 when the rapidly improving Thistlecrack scored, many of those at the head of the Stayers’ Hurdle betting in 2018 have plenty of miles on the clock.
The Irish trained Supasundae is likely to go off favourite following his defeat of Faugheen at Leopardstown in February. But there’s every chance Faugheen under-performed that day, the trip was only two miles and the victory was only the fourth of Supasundae’s 13-race career over hurdles. This is not a CV which jumps out at you.
Apple of anyone’s eye
Conversely Apple’s Jade, trained by last year’s leading Cheltenham Festival trainer, Gordon Elliott, has all the right credentials. Ten wins and four seconds in a 14-race career, successful last time out on her first and only attempt at three miles and defeating Supasundae in the process.
The main problem… Apple’s Jade is a mare and connections may choose to run her in the considerably easier assignment which is the Mares Hurdle race. She is odds-on for that race with every bookie.
There are similar alternatives for other horses towards the head of the betting in the Stayers Hurdle. Faugheen is likely to stay at two-miles are attempt to land a second Champion Hurdle while Yanworth, as short as 6/1 in the Stayers Hurdle betting, is likely to run in a handicap chase at the Festival instead.
Nothing New with 7-time One
So, amongst those that are confirmed by connections as ‘taking their place in the field’ we like two horses. Firstly the incredibly talented, tough and versatile The New One.
In what will be his seventh visit to the Cheltenham Festival, the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained horse will also be racing over two-miles six-furlongs for the first time in his career.
This lack of form over this extended distance did not stop last year’s victor, Nichols Canyon, and if it were not for his age – The New One is 10 and it has been 30 years since any horse over nine has won this race – we would make him our ‘Nap’ selection.
In a Spin
But common sense says we have to go with the lightly raced and clearly improving Sam Spinner. The six year old has shown gradual improvement throughout his seven hurdle starts culminating with a near three length victory in Ascot’s Long Walk Hurdle in December.
The three-mile race is unquestionably the best guide to the Stayers’ Hurdle and it is the route Thistlecrack took to Cheltenham Festival glory in 2016. Big Bucks, Baracouda and My Way de Solzen did the same before that.
Sam Spinner is currently trading around 5/1 with Betfair which makes him a viable each-way bet. If he were prepared by a higher profile stable he would surely be a lot shorter in the Cheltenham betting. But Jedd O’Keeffe has done nothing wrong with this horse and he may yet be a superstar in the making.
Recommended Stayers’ Hurdle Bet:
Sam Spinner (each way) at 5/1 with Betfair Sportsbook
Jedd O’Keeffe isn’t a trainer associated with Championship wins at the Cheltenham Festival, but he is a talented handler and his Sam Spinner has quickly progressed through the handicap ranks to establish himself as the best staying hurdler in the UK so far this season.
A horse with a wonderful attitude, stamina and the ability to jump for fun, he is a worthy market leader at Cheltenham betting odds of 4/1 for the St Patrick’s Thursday feature race.
The pick of the Irish runners is probably last year’s Coral Cup winner Supasundae for Jessica Harrington, a good looking horse that stays well and has made a perfect transition to contesting higher grades of race. He could peak to produce a career best back at the scene of his finest hour.
Penhill, Finian’s Oscar and L’Ami Serge stand out as other horses likely to be high in the Stayers Hurdle betting market on the day.
