Tip For Cheltenham’s Kim Muir Chase Impulsive Star To Repel Irish In Amateur’s ‘Gold Cup’

Impulsive Star and jockey Sam Waley-Cohen can see off a strong Irish challenge in Thursday’s amateur’s ‘Gold Cup.’

Many of the top Irish amateur jockeys are as good as, if not better, than a large number of their professional counterparts so the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup for amateur riders is always a major target for the likes of Jamie Codd, Patrick Mullins and Derek O’Connor. British rider Sam Waley-Cohen has enjoyed plenty of success himself however, especially over the Grand National fences, and looks to have a great ride in this renewal aboard his father’s Impulsive Star.

Stamina – Impulsive Star’s Greatest Asset

The winner of three of his five runs over hurdles Impulsive Star has recorded just the one victory over the bigger obstacles in six attempts but that was in Warwick’s valuable 3m 5f Classic Handicap Chase on his most recent start. The form of that race is working out well with the third Crosspark going on to win Newcastle’s marathon Eider Chase while the fourth horse Carole’s Destrier took a competitive contest at Newbury at the weekend.

A creditable fourth behind Grand National fancies Rathvinden and MS Parfois in the 4m National Hunt Chase at last year’s festival the Neil Mulholland-trained nine-year-old split those two performances with an excellent second to the exciting OK Corral at Plumpton and rates a good value each-way bet at the 14-1 available with Ladbrokes and Coral (nrnb) in their Cheltenham betting odds for Thursday’s 3m 2f stamina test.

Its All Guesswork Participation In Some Doubt

The betting is headed by the Gordon Elliott-trained Its All Guesswork at a general 8-1 but the possible mount of Jamie Codd may struggle to gain his place in a race limited to 24 runners. On a mark of 133 the seven-year-old stands at number 66 in the current pecking order. With that in mind Measureofmydreams may end up Elliott’s main hope and while the eleven-year-old is not getting any younger he wasn’t disgraced at the three major festivals last season and is sure to be well primed for a more suitable target.
