Conor “The Notorious” McGregor (21-4-0) makes his long-awaited return to the octagon a Welterweight bout against the veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (36-13-0) at UFC246 at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday night.
This is a big test for McGregor, who remains the biggest draw in the MMA. If he were to lose to “Cowboy”, he could find that position under serious threat.
The 31 year-old Irishman McGregor hasn’t fought since losing to a third round submission against the Russian legend Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018. McGregor is hoping that a win over Cerrone will put him in line for a rematch with Nurmagomedov later in the year (the plan being that he first takes on Jorge Masvidal in his next fight).
Just a couple months before that fight against Nurmagomedov, McGregor took to the boxing ring for another high-profile and highly-lucrative fight against another unbeaten legend in Floyd Mayweather Jr. it was another fight that ended in defeat, with the American stopping McGregor in the 10th round.
There’s clearly no disgrace in losing to either Mayweather Jr. or Nurmagomedov, but the harsh reality is that McGregor last won a fight way back in November, when he beat Eddie Alvarez. Does he still have the motivation in the octagon to win again?
There are signs that the years might be catching up with the 36 year-old “Cowboy”. Cerrone who will face McGregor on the back of having lost his last two fights.
In June last year, the doctor stopped Cerrone’s fight against Tony Ferguson at the end of the second round due to an eye injury and the 36 year-old American then went on to lose to Justin Gaethje after a 1st round KO in September 2019.
Donald Cerrone carries a threat with his grappling skills, but Conor McGregor should win this and is a warm favourite at 1/3 with Betfair to do so. Those backing Cerrone can get UFC betting odds of 13/5 with Coral.
A better value UFC246 bet for those looking to back McGregor could be in the ‘Method of Victory’ betting market, where he is 9/1 with Betfair to win by Decision or Technical Decision. The 7/4 with Betway on ‘Over 2.5’ in the Total Rounds Over/Under market also looks tempting.
