Tennis legends Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will face each other for what will be the 50th time in their illustrious careers in Melbourne on Thursday. At stake is a place in the final of the men’s singles at the Australian Open 2020.
The players have had very different routes to the semi-final, with Federer having been stretched to the limit on a couple of occasions already. In the third round he just scraped past Australia’s John Millman in five sets, 4–6 7–6 (7-2) 6–4 4–6 7–6 (10-8), having trailed 8-4 in the final set tie-break.
He didn’t have things all his own way early on in the fourth round against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics either, but eventually came through 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-2.
Where the 38 year-old really had to draw on all his experience was in his quarter-final against another American, Tennys Sandgren. Federer had to save seven match points, but finally prevailed with a grueling 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 win in three hours and 28 minutes against the world number 100.
The problem is that it’s defending champion Novak Djokovic who now stands before Federer and the Serbian is unlikely to let him off the hook should he gain the initiative.
Djokovic, who is aiming for an eighth Australian Open title (Federer is only looking to secure his seventh!), has dropped just one set in five rounds to date and has yet to lose a match in 2020.
In his quarter-final, he managed to thwart the big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic in straight sets to come through 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-1).
Djokovic vs Federer – Head To Head
Novak Djokovic leads Roger Federer 26-23 on the head-to-head stats, although Federer did win 6-4 6-3 the last time they met at the ATP Finals last year.
Djokovic won six of the previous seven matches though, including a remarkable 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 13-12 (7-3) victory in what was the longest ever Wimbledon final at four hours 57 minutes last year.
Federer clearly still has the stamina to go the distance, but those earlier matches have surely taken their toll, particularly as he also received treatment for a groin injury against Sandgren.
