“ Bring it on “ was how winning jockey Jim Crowley summed up the mouthwatering prospect of his Qatar King George Stakes winner Battaash taking on US sprinting sensation Lady Aurelia in York’s Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes on Friday 25th August.

The Wesley Ward-trained filly had looked almost unbeatable over the minimum trip when running away with Royal Ascot’s King’s Stand Stakes back in June, causing bookmakers to offer little better than even money about the daughter of Scat Daddy following up on the Knavesmire, odds which have now lengthened  to a top price of 6-4 due to the emergence of a serious stumbling-block in the shape of Charlie Hills’ three-year-old who is unbeaten in three starts this season including when breaking the track record at Sandown on Eclipse day.

A best price 9-4 with Betfair Sportsbook for York’s Group 1 speed test the son of Dark Angel was allowed to go off a generous 9-2 chance at the Sussex venue due to the prevailing soft ground, conditions which failed to dampen the gelding’s potent turn of foot, of which Crowley said: “ I never felt like I was in trouble at any stage. He has so much natural speed. I don’t think I’ve ridden a better sprinter. It’s like riding a motorbike up the gallops.”

All roads now lead to York and a clash of the sprinting giants in less than three weeks time, a prospect which Hills is looking forward to, saying: “ I think five furlongs at York should really suit him. We have the American horse to contend with there as well. That should make it a good race.”

A ‘ good race ‘ is possibly an understatement by his handler as this race has the potential to be one of the highlights of the 2017 season, with the victor likely to be regarded as one of the outstanding sprinters of recent years. Both horses could end the season on the other side of the Atlantic in the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint for which the British horse is an 8-1 chance with Betfair Sportsbook.
