Both West Ham and Liverpool have struggled for form at times this season, but one team meets the other in much better shape despite falling well short of expectations. The Reds have begun to look like their old selves in recent games, scoring seven goals away at Maribor in the Champions League and three at home to Huddersfield. They have been lacking the trademark creativity in recent weeks and their energy levels have dropped well below those expected of a Jurgen Klopp side.
Every time Slaven Bilic looks to ease the pressure at West Ham, everything seems to revert to the very worst scenario. After losing 3-0 to Brighton in their last game at the London Stadium, Bilic looked like a dead man walking, but a comeback against Tottenham in the League Cup seemed to have calmed the discontent, only until they were on the receiving end of a Crystal Palace recovery from 2-0 on Saturday.
On balance, this should be a comfortable win for Liverpool to help get fans off Klopp’s back.
Liverpool were early season favourites for a Champions League spot and an outside bet for the title. But much to their fans’ frustration, the same issues, notably in defence, have stopped them progressing. It took them some time to break down Huddersfield’s resistance, having missed a penalty, but they are still recovering from a humiliating 4-1 loss at Tottenham, which summed up their awful defensive record. The Reds have conceded 16 goals, just three fewer than West Ham, despite being ten places higher in the Premier League, and they have only won once on the road this term.
Most people expected West Ham to enjoy a great Premier League season after signing both Joe Hart and Javier Hernandez in the summer. But their squad of talented individuals is yet to morph into a real team and as such, they have had trouble finding consistency. Just two home wins this season spells trouble, and there are some tough fixtures on the horizon heading into Christmas too. Defeat could see them drop into the relegation zone.
While Liverpool have been defensively weak for most of the season, they have also struggled in attack. Klopp has been rather unlucky with injuries, with Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana both on the long-term absentee list. Philippe Coutinho should return to the Premier League side after missing the win over Huddersfield and he is our tip to score first on Saturday evening. In defence, Klopp must make a decision, with Dejan Lovren, whom many fans blame for recent issues at the back, joining Nathaniel Clyne on the treatment table. Ragnar Klaven will likekly deputise.
The worrying thing for West Ham is that they have been in such bad shape even with a strong team out. Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic have both been suspended and were on the bench at Palace but could return to the line up. Captain Winston Reid is their only major doubt, with James Collins also unlikely to feature.
