Premier League betting: Back Tottenham to Grind Out a Victory Against Manchester UnitedPublished April 7, 2016
Both of these teams go into this match playing catch-up, with Tottenham trying to make up a seven-point deficit on table-topping Leicester City and Manchester United attempting to keep pace with local rivals Manchester City in the race for a top four finish.
The greater pressure is on Tottenham as, if they are going to have any chance of winning the title from this point, you have to think that it’s imperative that they win their remaining home games as an absolute minimum.
On the plus side, they will at least go into this match already knowing the result from Leicester’s trip to Sunderland earlier on Sunday. The outcome at the Stadium of Light could have a massive bearing on Tottenham self-belief going into this game and will certainly be reflected in the atmosphere at White Hart Lane.
These teams have the best defensive records in the Premier League this season so, even though Tottenham are also the league’s highest scorers, a low-scoring encounter looks a distinct possibility.
Although Manchester United have won their last two Premier League games to stay on the heels of Manchester City, they’ve only scored five goals in their last seven games in all competitions and not more than a solitary goal in any one of those games. They’ve also only conceded five goals during this time – if you want goals, Manchester United isn’t the team to be watching at the moment.
Unlike last week, Manchester United will at least know the results of the teams they are looking to catch from earlier in the weekend. Whether that is a positive or not is another matter.
Given Tottenham’s work-rate and pressing of the opposition in their own half, it’s difficult to envisage this somewhat pedestrian Man.Utd team causing too many problems to a defensive unit as organised and disciplined as that of Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino.
It might take them a while to make a breakthrough, but Spurs should have enough about them to score at least one goal here. Given the limitations of the opposition going forward and their own defensive excellence, that might be all they require.
