Premier League betting: Manchester City and Arsenal to battle for third placePublished May 5, 2016
Many pundits at the beginning of the Premier League season, or even in January, would have looked at this as a possible title decider. However, the game still retains a lot of importance as the two teams are still fighting over third and last automatic place in the Champions League.
Arsenal’s Spanish Left-back was perhaps being a little over enthusiastic when he referred to the match as “like a final.”
Manchester City will be going into the game on the back of exiting the Champions League at the semi-final stage and were only an outside of a post away from securing an unlikely trip to the San Siro for the final. A Fernando own goal was the only difference between the sides in the two legs, but City did not trouble Real enough at the Bernabeu.
Furthermore, club captain Vincent Kompany was injured and limped off during the first half of the game and is a major doubt to play at the Etihad.
Arsenal are in better shape to hold on to third place they secured last week after an unconvincing 1-0 win against Norwich at the Emirates, with City losing 4-2 to Southampton after resting many senior players in advance of the Real clash.
The Gunners even have a small hope of gaining on Spurs in second place, but a point at the Etihad will be enough to remain in the top four regardless of any other results.
Arsene Wenger’s team could also welcome back Santi Carzola who played in a competitive Under-21’s match during the week and is expected to play some role in the game as the diminutive Spaniard seeks to prove Vincente del Bosque that he is fit for EURO 2016.
Arsenal have stuttered this season against the smaller teams but have usually fared better in the big games.
