Barcelona v Manchester City Betting PredictionPublished October 18, 2016
The glamour tie of the third Champions League round is taking place in Barcelona with the Catalan giants playing host to Manchester City. The most obvious link between the two clubs is Pep Guardiola, the current Blues boss. He made his name as both a player and manager at the Camp Nou, winning a treble in his debut season as coach of Lionel Messi and company.
The fact that he had the privilege of coaching Messi among others isn’t lost among the anti-Pep brigade, a shower who are determined to besmirch his good name. Subsequent success with Bayern Munich was treated with the same dismissiveness by certain supporters. Sure, didn’t he only have the best players in the league again? Plus, he didn’t even win the Champions League.
One significantly glorious moment for anti-Peppers must have been when Guardiola came up against his old team in 2015. Bayern were up against Barcelona in the UCL semi-finals and Guardiola got a taste of his own medicine, his boys being outplayed by Europe’s best team.
City actually came up against Barca in the same competition, getting knocked out in the last 16 round after losing both legs. This was a case of deja vu, the exact same thing happening the year before that. So club and coach have been battered before by Barca. Maybe this time, working together, they can finally beat up the Catalan bullies. But we doubt it.
Entering this game on the back of a string of disappointing results, City haven’t won any of their last three games. Before this, Guardiola had won his first ten games. He won’t get a win this Wednesday though. His City side are too young and experienced to beat a Barca of this quality.
With Lionel Messi back fit, and scoring, Luis Enrique doesn’t have any major injury concerns with Jordi Alba training with the team ahead of this tie. City also don’t have any major injury concerns with Vincent Kompany even returning as a substitute in their recent draw with Everton.
