Betting Tip: Jezki at 4/7 with Ladbrokes

Following on from the Irish Gold Cup day on Sunday at Leopardstown, the vast majority of water has gone under the bridge in terms of preparations and trials for the 2017 Cheltenham Festival.

On Saturday, Gowran Park host Red Mills trials day and in the 3.05pm Grade 3 Trial Hurdle over two miles, Jessica Harrington’s former champion hurdler Jezki looks to build on a thoroughly decent victory after a layoff at Navan last time out.

He looks a strong 4/7 favourite to win this contest and go on to Cheltenham next month with a big part to play in the day one feature race, the Champion Hurdle.

Jezki hasn’t been beaten since the 2015 Champion Hurdle itself, where he finished fourth behind Faugheen, Hurricane Fly and Arctic Fire. He followed up by winning the Aintree Hurdle by thirteen lengths, demolishing Rock On Ruby in the process. He showed the kind of horse he is by stepping up to three miles at Punchestown in the Grade 1 Stayers Hurdle later the same month when beating Hurricane Fly to end another brilliant season on a high.

The now nine-year-old then picked up a niggly injury which kept him off the track until the 21st of January, 2017. He went off a fair 11/8 fav on the day, but was able to establish his dominance over Renneti and Tombstone without having to work too hard. In producing an RPR of 152, he is well below what will be required to win at Cheltenham next month, but any progression from that effort or even a repeat of it will see him win this prep race well.

Willie Mullins’ Limini is entered here and she would be a very welcome addition to the race, while Gordon Elliott’s unexposed Sutton Place is unbeaten in his last four races and deserving of a shot at a horse like Jezki. But Harrington’s charge should be much the best here.
