Bet365 Gold Cup betting: Back Paint The Clouds to enjoy the ground at Sandown ParkPublished April 21, 2016
The bet365 Gold Cup at 4:10pm at Sandown Park on Saturday marks the end of an outstanding and memorable National Hunt season and with the undertone of the Trainers Championship battle playing out on the big day, it’s set to be a fun afternoon of racing. Both Paul Nicholls and Willie Mullins are represented in the bet365 Gold Cup and the race would have a huge say in outcome if either were to win. But there is a strong array of alternatives and Warren Greatrex’s PAINT THE CLOUDS looks the value with the weather being so nice this week.
In last years’ race, Paint The Clouds went off as a well supported 13/2 favourite. With rain arriving earlier in the day before the race, the ground turned out to be a little softer than ideal for the horse, but nevertheless he handled the hustle and bustle of his first big handicap chase and finished an excellent fourth. He is better known as one of the best hunter chasers around but was far from out of place in this race last year.
This season Paint The Clouds has enjoyed a light campaign with just three races taken in. He’s gone off as the favourite for the last two Cheltenham Foxhunter races at the festival but on both occasions has finished third behind On The Fringe; just not quite being able to have his well deserved big day in the spotlight. Once again at Cheltenham last time out, he finished best of all in the closing stages over the 3m2f distance and the step up by three furlongs should suit him.
If the ground keeps on drying up, Paint The Clouds has a big chance again at a big price and will appeal to many each-way backers. He seems to have been trained for the race again and it would be a deserving win for a talented chaser if he were able to do the job. Southfield Theatre, Henri Parry Morgan and The Young Master are big dangers to all, while the Mullins trained Measureofmydreams could fare best of the Irish challengers.
