Grand National 2017 Tip:
Saphir Du Rheu to win at 20/1 with 888Sport

Looking at this year’s Randox Grand National runners, it’s hard to find a classier staying chaser than Saphir Du Rheu, and Grand National betting odds of 20/1 looks too big for the 2017 renewal.

Owned by Andy Stewart and trained by Paul Nicholls at Ditcheat, Saphir Du Rheu has never reached the heights of the stables more illustrious horses, such as Kauto Star, Denman or Big Bucks, but that could change given this step up the Grand National’s 4 mile 2 furlong marathon distance.

When last seen on a race track, Saphir Du Rheu was staying on up the Cheltenham hill in this years Gold Cup, finishing 5th. The horses that beat him that day are arguably the best staying chasers in training (Thistlecrack being the obvious omission). That run should put him spot on for this challenge.

When looked at as a whole, Saphir Du Rheu has had a good season; starting back in October where he started his campaign with an excellent 3rd to Antony at Ascot.  Finishing a 4 length third he gave the winner 24lb that day.

His next assignment was in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury where he was a little unlucky to fall at the 4th fence. Saphir Du Rheu was next seen at Cheltenham in January when finishing second and giving 23 lengths to Foxtail Hill.

His first win of the season came at Kelso, where only having to jump round, he landed the odds at 1/7 in a canter.

Paul Nicholls understands what it takes to win a Grand National; winning it with Neptune Collonges in 2012, and could very well have another winner with our fancy.

Nicky Henderson currently leads the Trainers Championship, but a win here should seal it for Paul Nicholls. With the emphasis on class and stamina, we expect to see Saphir Du Rheu challenging for the win.
ITV will be showing the Grand National for this first time this year, with the big race due to go off at 5:15pm on Saturday 8th April 2017.
