Grand National 2017 Betting Tip:
The Last Samuri at 14/1 at Paddy Power

When looking at which runner to place your 2017 Grand National free bet, it’s hard to ignore last year’s second placed horse The Last Samuri.  Having looked the likely winner, he was denied victory by the now retired Rule the World in the last 150 yards.

The Last Samuri has run three times this season.  He kicked off his campaign in the Grade 1 JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal and was entitled to be beaten that day coming up against both Silviniaco Conti and the winner, Valseur Lido.

His next race was more up his street in the Betfred Becher chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree. He finished a very promising third to Vieux Lion Rouge, giving him 17lb and losing out by just over one length.

He was then given a break by his trainer Kim Bailey, and was next seen in action in Doncaster’s Grimthorpe Chase, a race he’d won the season before.  This year he had to settle for second place behind a race fit and battle hardened Definitely Red.  He shaped as if needing the run and his trainer will have him primed for the National.

The Last Samuri gives his running whatever the going, and should be bouncing off the ground at Aintree. He’s proven over both course and distance and has plenty of class to win off his weight of 11st 9lb.

By the second circuit the field usually thins to just the contenders.  He will no doubt be setting the pace, jumping well and I anticipate that he’ll be kicking on with 4 furlongs left to run.

He looks a cracking bet and barring accidents, you’re nailed on to get a great run for your money. His owners Paul and Clare Rooney, have put fortunes into both codes of racing and a win in this will be warmly welcomed by all.

This year, ITV take over Grand National from Channel 4.  The new line up led by Ed Chamberlain is already proving popular in the press and on social media, and they will have a fantastic opportunity to really showcase their talent.
