Europa League betting: Records to be broken as Villarreal face LiverpoolPublished April 27, 2016
Something has to give at El Madrigal when these two teams meet as both have unbeaten records to protect.
Liverpool are the only club to go from the start of the group stage to matchday 12 unbeaten, with five victories and seven draws, more than any other side in the 2015/16 tournament. The Reds are the first team to have gone 12 games unbeaten in a single UEFA Europa League campaign, group stage to final, though Club Atlético de Madrid went 15 matches without defeat across two editions of the UEFA Europa League from November 2011 to October 2012.
Villarreal are unbeaten in 11 Europa League outings and will match their record if they beat Liverpool at home.
However, Villarreal are also the only team left in the competition never to have won the cup, reaching the semi-finals twice, against Valencia in 2003/04 and FC Porto in 2010/11. Both sides went on to win the trophy, which could be a good omen for Liverpool should they progress to the final.
Villarreal are the highest scoring team in the Europa league. However, their recent league form has not been great. They have managed to garner one point from the last nine with only one goal scored. This has left them far behind the top three of Barcelona and the two teams from Madrid.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have been finding some recent form. Although they let a recent two goal lead against Newcastle at Anfield slip to a 2-2 draw, the two games prior have seen the Reds hit the back of the net four times, against Liverpool rivals Everton and Stoke City.
At home, Villarreal are a force to be reckoned with, beating both Real and Atletico Madrid at El Madrigal and drawing 2-2 with Barcelona, so Liverpool will not find it easy going.
