The stranglehold of Spanish football on the European game could be loosening a little, judging by the progression of the Champions League and Europa League this season. But with Real Madrid set to knockout Atletico and Celta Vigo still going strong, the tide has not turned quite yet.
Marcus Rashford’s stunning freekick gave Jose Mourinho a crucial away goal and win in the first leg, despite a growing number of injuries within his squad. The United boss has done a u-turn on his attitude towards the Europa League; at the start of the season he saw it as an unnecessary distraction, now it is their best bet of Champions League qualification.
Throughout the competition, United have struggled more away from home than at Old Trafford, which bodes well for them coming into this one. Celta are typical for a Spanish team, good on the ball technically with quality in attack, but they are also well organised at the back too.
Boss Eduardo Berizzo likes to play a high-pressure game and that will definitely cause problems for the home side. Manchester United have previously struggled to break teams down at Old Trafford when being too slow in the build up against teams who will sit in and not allow much space in behind. Celta, similarly to Atletico Madrid, defend and attack as a unit, meaning there is little space anywhere on the pitch.
But since the knee injury to 28-goal striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, United have looked much more fluid in attack. Rashford gives them an outlet who can both run in behind and at defences, pulling them out of position and creating space for others.
In terms of attacking threats, former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas poses the biggest, having scored 17 LaLiga goals and five Europa League goals this season. He will look to get in behind and the supply line will appear from central areas so must be cut off.
United seem to be focussed very much on this competition and could be in for a nervy night. It will be tight, but our Europa League Bet365 free bonus tip suggests they will edge through to the final.
