Germany began their European Championships in typically clinical if not scintillating form. A 2-0 win against a plucky Ukraine who gave almost as good as they got in the opening encounter.
The Germans struck first just before the 20-minute mark, with Shkodran Mustafi heading his team in front from a set-piece delivery from Toni Kroos.However, Ukraine had some excellent chances with one attempt in particular saved off the line by Jerome Boateng before substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger gave Germany an insurance goal from a counter-attack in injury time, as Mesut Ozil found the Manchester United man at the far post and he calmly volleyed home.
Poland beat plucky Northern Ireland 1-0 with Arkadiusz Milik who broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, receiving Jakub Blaszczykowski’s pass before driving a shot low past the Northern Ireland keeper. The Polish dominated most of the game and looked comfortable until a few late forays produced some heart-stopping moments for the Polish fans.
There is a history of teams following their World Cup victory with winning the European Championships. France followed up the World Cup in 1998 with the European Championship in the Netherlands and Belgium 2000, and Spain won the World Cup in South Africa during 2010 and followed it with retaining the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
These two teams faced each other in the qualifying campaign, which each nation winning their home game comfortably. Poland beat Germany 2-0 in Warsaw with goals from Milik and Sebastian Mila, and Germany won the opposite fixture in Frankfurt 3-1 with all goals scored by Bayern Munich players. Mario Götze bagged a brace following an opener by Thomas Muller, and a consolation goal by Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski has been described as the best striker at the championships and is team-mates with many of the German players at club level. However, Poland have demonstrated they are more than a one player team and have many other players that are underrated on the international stage, like Grzegorz Krychowiak who was the heartbeat of a Sevilla midfield that has won the Europa League three years in a row and Milik who scored 21 in the Eredivisie for Ajax.
