Boxing Betting Preview: Back Andre Ward to Win Sergey Kovalev at 10/11 with SkybetPublished June 14, 2017
Boxing Betting Tip: Andre Ward to win by Decision at 10/11 (1.91) with SkyBet
Andre Ward won the WBA (Undisputed), IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles on the 19th of November last year by a unanimous 114-113 margin over Sergey Kovalev, a somewhat controversial vote but the American got it done.
There is unfinished business here though and the pair must revisit scene, albeit this time from over the road at the Mandalay Bay centre in Las Vegas for Part II of what could well turn out to be a Trilogy series between the two world class sluggers.
The boxing betting odds suggests there is very little between them once again with most firms offering odds of 4/6 (1.67) on the champion Andre Ward successfully defending his titles, and the challenger Sergey Kovalev at 5/4 (2.25).
The first fight between Ward and Kovalev was close throughout and looked like it would be separated by Kovalev’s second-round knockdown – which was a clean and powerful shot – but the judges awarded the fight to the Ward with the 114-113 scorecards.
Kovalev started much better to take the first round from Ward, who started slow and the Russian cemented his early dominance by throwing a speculative jab which saw Ward lean in and get caught by a thudding right hand bringing the champion to his knees.
The American got back to his feet quickly enough and smiled as if to suggest it was a flash knockdown but it summed up his tardy start to the bout.
The third round was close but Kovalev was the aggressor and controlled the ring with some silky footwork, and despite not landing many clean punches, seemed to have done enough to take it 10-9.
But as Ward seemed to have recovered from the knockdown he was on the back foot again in the fourth. He tried to make things happen but almost looked a little desperate, getting caught by a counter right hand after lunging forward.
From the fifth round onwards Ward grew to the occasion, began to find his combinations and his timing on the chin of Kovalev, racking up round after round of clean work in front of the judges.
Kovalev got his second wind in the tenth round and put in some solid late work to force a very close and arguable decision and it is hard to know which of these two men will learn the most.
You’d have to feel that if Andre Ward can do more in his warm-up to ensure a sharper start, he should be able to execute a decision victory provided he doesn’t get caught.
The outcome of this rematch, in many ways, depends on how quickly Ward can get to the 4th & 5th gear he displayed from rounds 5 through to 10 in the first fight. So that will be the goal for Ward.
For Kovalev it’ll be more of the same but the Russian will work to preserve his energy for the later rounds. Andre Ward is capable of putting together a more complete performance than he did last time and can show the world why he is one of the best pound for pound fighters of the modern era.
Odds of 10/11 is on offer from several big name bookmakers including SkyBet, Ladbrokes and Boylesports about Andre Ward winning this unification rematch by a Decision.
He has the experience, class and guts to make and implement the necessary alterations to ensure victory this time.
Ward v Kovalev 2 will be shown live in the early hours of Sunday morning on Sky Sports, make sure to tune into this unmissable event!
