Many people were watching Barcelona this season wondering just how would be able to continue their quest to dominate in Spain and Europe this season. The sale of Neymar to PSG, and everything that went on around it, appeared to rock them to the core. But a great start to the season with seven wins from eight in La Liga an a 100% record in the Champions League suggests, just like when they have been doubted before, that they have bounced back.
Saturday night’s draw with Atletico Madrid showed some weaknesses in their game, but also the same spirit and work ethic that has always made them so great. Luis Suarez’s header cancelled out Saul Niguez’s first half strike and they could have won it at the end. The Blaugrana were too passive against arguably the world’s best defence, and while Olympiacos will arrive at the Camp Nou looking to be as organised as they were against Juventus in their last game, which they lost 2-0 in Turin, the hosts should have far too much attacking quality.
Suarez has not enjoyed the best start to the season. Two goals in the opening four games is poor by his standards, but a couple scored for Uruguay last week added to that crucial equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano, have built his confidence up again. He’ll be in the mood to put Olympiacos to the sword, and while Barcelona are overwhelming favourites in the game, backing him to score first in a home win at 9/4 could offer real value with the right stake. Lionel Messi can be found at 11/8.
The longer the game stays goalless, the more frustrated Barcelona will grow. Yet, they have so much attacking quality, even without Neymar, that they can win the game comfortably in second gear. If they do score early, they could really run away with it, so there it is well worth looking at big score bets here. We recommend a home win with three or four total goals at 11/8 or a 3-0 home win at 11/2.
Key battle: Jordi Alba vs Kostas Fortounis
Barcelona will dominate almost every aspect of the play, but they could be caught out on the break. Fortounis is an exciting player with a lot of pace and someone who will not be afraid to run at players. Alba has not been in great form for some time now and is a weakness that can be exploited.
Ernesto Valverde started Andre Gomes on the left in the attack against Atletico, and he didn’t offer much support as Yannick Carrasco threatened from a lot of positions, particularly in the first half.
