VIDEO: Sanchez strike in vain as Arsenal are hammered by BayernPublished February 15, 2017
Alexis Sanchez’s goal wasn’t enough to prevent Arsenal from succumbing to a heavy 5-1 defeat against Bayern Munich in their Champions League last-16 first leg.
Trailing 1-0 thanks to Arjen Robben’s superb long-range effort, the Gunners were indebted to the productive Chilean for getting them back on on an equal footing just before half-time.
After Laurent Koscielny was found in the box during a corner, Sanchez initially saw his penalty-kick saved by Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal.
The attacker then scuffed the rebound, only to gather the loose ball and slide a shot into the far corner of the hosts’ net- his 20th in all competitions for the north Londoners.
But, ultimately, the strike will in all likelihood prove to be in vain following a second-half capitulation from Arsene Wenger’s side.
Three goals in the space of 10 minutes from Thiago Alcantara (2) and Robert Lewandowski turned the tie majorly in Bayern’s favour, before Thomas Muller completed the rout late on.
