‘There’s no better centre-back in the league’: Manchester City & Liverpool target lauded following cup winPublished January 12, 2017
Virgil Van Dijk has been named as the best centre-back in the league by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.
The £50 millon-rated Dutchman produced a Man of the Match performance in Southampton’s EFL Cup first-leg win over Liverpool on Wednesday night, and has attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton following a series of impressive displays over the course of the past season.
And speaking after the 1-0 victory, which was secured by Nathan Redmond’s 20th minute goal, Redknapp insisted that the imposing Saints defender should now be regarded as the best in his position in the Premier League after dominating Daniel Sturridge in the victory on the south coast.

'Why did you take all that sh*t out on the pitch' his teammate said.
“He’s immense, I say it every time I watch him,” he said. “He gets better and better. It was like watching a man play against a little boy in Daniel Sturridge, he bullied him all game.
“He never gave him a sniff. He’s got the after-burners, he’s so comfortable on the ball. Whoever decides to buy him, he is a fantastic player.
“There’s not a better centre-back in the Premier League.”
The former England international’s words were echoed by Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, who also reserved praise for Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.
“I like Alderweireld, and those two are the best two centre-backs in the Premier League,” he added.
Van Dijk has scored four goals in 28 appearances for Claude Puel’s side so far this campaign as he has meshed defensive excellence with an eye for goal in the opposition box.
Southampton now head to Anfield later this month with a slender one-goal lead, knowing a win or a draw would confirm their place in the EFL Cup final in February.
