The former Spurs striker revealed that the club were in talks with Maradona but it was then manager Ardiles that changed his mind about the transfer. Instead the boss turned his attention to German striker Jurgen Klinsmann, who, despite being a success at Spurs, only lasted one season before returning to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Maradona’s off-pitch struggles too much of a hindrance for a deal to happen.

But can you imagine Maradona playing for Spurs? Well, in the 1980s he did wear a Spurs shirt for Ardiles’ testimonial.

It would have been fun watching an all-time great tear defences apart up and down the country, especially for Spurs’ fans.
