Italian giants Inter have held talks with Real Madrid over a possible summer swoop for unsettled playmaker James Rodriguez, according to Football Italia via The Sun.

The Colombian has struggled at the Santiago Bernabeu since current boss Zinedine Zidane took over from Rafael Benitez in January 2016, just 18 months after his mega-money switch from AS Monaco.

The report claims Inter are making inroads on the man who inspired his country to the quarter finals of the 2014 World Cup as Player of the Tournament, a performance which alerted Real to his abilities at elite level.

The Nerazzurri are hoping to create a ‘transfer alliance’ with Los Blancos, to give them an advantage in the race for any unwanted Galacticos. Manchester United and Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Rodriguez.

Like Rodriguez, Inter are looking to return to the top of their game, having slipped away from the top of Serie A since winning the treble under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
