Ronaldo responds to insensitive Michael Owen tweet
Last weekend Cristiano Ronaldo was presented his fourth Ballon d’Or in front of the Real Madrid fans.
To mark the occasion, Real Madrid invited former Ballon d’Or winners to the match – Michael Owen, Ronaldo (the Brazilian), Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo.
What a sight to behold for the fans. All four of these players represented Los Blancos throughout their career, and return to celebrate their latest legend.
So, this was a special occasion. Going to plan as Real Madrid also went on to thrash Granada 5-0.
That was until Michael Owen lost the run of himself on social media and made an insensitive joke about Ronaldo’s weight.
The former Liverpool striker took to Twitter and said: “I thought I was putting the pounds on until I saw my old mate Ronnie!”

I very much doubt he’s your mate, Owen.
If Ronaldo was his mate surely Owen would know he suffers from hypothyroidism – an illness that causes weight gain and a puffy face.
Ronaldo has decided to respond to the distasteful joke through Madrid-based newspaper AS.
“I did not talk to him [Owen] after he wrote that, but I’m afraid the importance of my weight still remains in the world we live in. I do not know what that means, really?”
Time to wind it in, Owen. You’re not funny even if your punditry is parody esque.
