Real Madrid star reveals he rejected summer move to Manchester UnitedPublished September 5, 2016
It seems that you actually can say no to Manchester United these days.
The Red Devils spent the summer transfer window attracting some of the world’s biggest stars, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba making the move to Old Trafford.
But despite such signings, it seems that United boss Jose Mourinho has hid eyes set on another major deal this summer.
News coming out of Spain suggests that French defender, Raphael Varane opted to spurn reported interest from United, in order to remain with Real Madrid.
It was reported during the summer, that Mourinho was desperate to reunite with the young defender, with the pair working previously together at the Santiago Bernabeu.
But Varane, who is currently in France on international duty, spoke to Canal+ about his decision to stay in Madrid this summer.
The 23-year-old centre-back admitted he was “flattered” but was clearly convinced by Zinedine Zidane to stay put, despite making only 23 La Liga starts last season.
“Of course it is flattering to hear that (the interest of Manchester United),” admitted Raphael Varane.
“Jose Mourinho is the one who made me come to Real Madrid and Manchester United is a great club. But from the moment I knew the project Real Madrid had for me there were no more questions”.
“I have always felt good at Real Madrid. I looked at the pros and cons. It was a life decision in respect to my career.”
“We are men and you must make decisions. Since the moment I knew what my role was going to be, I had no more questions.”
