Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford in the summer, tasked with re-establishing the Red Devils as one of Europe’s most successful clubs. Since Sir Alex Ferguson departed in 2013, retiring after 27 years at the helm, United have struggled to maintain their success, only winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the Champions League once since.

The club have spent huge amounts of money in pursuit of more titles, signing some of the world’s best players. Paul Pogba, the France international, joined last summer for a world-record £89million deal, leaving Juventus four years after swapping United for Turin as a teenager. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also joined, while Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao have come and gone. For most clubs, not getting into the Champions League would usually compromise a club’s ability to lure these big names, but seemingly not in United’s case.
It may take time to get the club back to the top, but they have the right man in charge in Mourinho and are showing the right level of ambition. Signing Kroos would be the next step on that road, and it would also show the pulling power of United, perhaps more than any other signing. Real Madrid are renowned as being the biggest club in the world, but buying a player from them, who they don’t want to sell, would be something of a power shift.
Ander Herrera has established himself as Pogba’s main partner in midfield this season after a tough time in his early Premier League career. While the Spaniard possesses good technique and passing range, his main strength is his athleticism. Mourinho often sacrifices him for Michael Carrick when he wants control of a game, but Kroos is a player who can combine both attributes perfectly.
Currently sixth in the Premier League, qualification for the Champions League via the league is once again in the balance. But after winning the EFL Cup last month, the building blocks are already in place for a bright future and they are in the race to win the FA Cup for the second year running. Most importantly, though, they are still very much in contention to win the Europa League, which would see them reach the Champions League as reward for victory.
For Real Madrid, signing David de Gea has become a priority in the last couple of years. A deal was almost completed in 2015, but for an issue with the paperwork to put it at an end. Now Manchester United will be keen to keep hold of the stopper, but it could be possible to see him used as a makeweight in any move for Kroos.
It is true, though, that United have the money to lure him to England, and doing so would be a huge step in the right direction.
This source claims that should Real Madrid fail to secure a La Liga or a Champions League title then a move to Old Trafford would become a distinct possibility.
