Real Madrid close in on Chelsea star as agent looks to seal £60m transfer
The agent of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is desperate to engineer a summer move to Real Madrid, according to the Daily Star.
Los Blancos have been in the market for a new goalkeeper for a number of years now despite Keylor Navas’ excellent form between the posts. David De Gea almost signed in the summer of 2015, with Navas heading to Manchester United as part of the deal, but a late delay with the paperwork scuppered the move.
Now would be a good time to move for Courtois as he enters the final year of his contract in England. The Blues have been linked with a move for Manchester City’s unwanted stopper Joe Hart as they look for a contingency plan, but they do have Asmir Begovic to call upon after a rumoured January move failed to materialise.
Courtois also settled in the Spanish capital on a personal level and his partner and daughter still reside there. As a result, despite success back in London with Chelsea, he is keen to move and be reunited with his new family.
Upon returning to Stamford Bridge in 2014, he has cemented his place as the club’s number one goalkeeper, winning the Premier League and League Cup in the process. Petr Cech, who had kept goal for 11 years in West London, was forced to join Arsenal in search of regular first team football.
A disastrous campaign last season, in which the Blues finished 10th, saw Jose Mourinho sacked and replaced by Antonio Conte last summer. The Italian has truly reinvigorated the club, who top the league once again and are well on the way to a second title in three years.
As for Real Madrid, they are going strong under boss Zinedine Zidane. In his first full season at the club, he is leading them to a first LaLiga title since 2012. Los Blancos sit top of the table, a point ahead of Barcelona with two games in hand. Having won the Champions League last season, despite only replacing Rafa Benitez the previous January, Real continue their bid to become the first team to retain the competition in its current format in the round of 16 against Napoli this month.
