Man United fans have gone into full on panic mode on Sunday, after it emerged that defender Eric Bailly could miss up to five weeks of action, after national side Ivory Coast, qualified for the African Cup on Nations, which is set to take place in January.

The £30m signing from Villarreal, has impressed since becoming the first major signing of the Jose Mourinho era in the summer.

But it now appears the defender will miss matches against Hull City, Stoke, and all important derby tie against Liverpool at Old Trafford

The competition, which was originally due to be held in Libya but was moved when the war-stricken country announced it wouldn’t be able to cope, will run from January 14th to February 5th early next year.

Should the tournament go to plan for the defending champions then he will also be absent for the visit to Leicester City in early February – the side against whom we won the Man of the Match award in August’s Community Shield.

Judging by the reaction on Twitter, United fan’s aren’t too happy about he prospect of losing their new signing during a period of real importance, in United’s bid to be crowned champions of England this season.

@ManUtd @ericbailly24 That's hardly good news for United. International tournaments during the season is a joke.
