Manchester United prepare £33m January move for Premier League playmaker as Jose Mourinho looks to most creative attacking options
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is preparing a surprise move for West Ham playmaker Dimtri Payet as he seeks to bring in additional creative attacking options in January.
Mournho has seen his Old Trafford side struggle for form this season and Man United have at times been toothless up front and frequently devoid of ideas in the final third.
Mourinho believes he can lure Payet in the January transfer window as the French international’s Upton Park side continue to fight at the wrong end of the Premier League table.
Chief executive Ed Woodward will look to enter into talks at the earliest opportunity and Man United are ready to offer as much as £33m for the French international.
West Ham paid £10.75m for Payet in June 2015 and as such an offer triple that outlay may be hard for the East London side to turn down.
In his debut season in the English top flight Payet made an instant impression, finishing 2015/16 with 12 assists, only Mesut Ozil and Christian Eriksen managed more, and also grabbed a dozen goals in all competitions.
Things haven’t worked out quite so well for Slaven Bilic’s side this term and the Croatian would have hoped the move to the Olympic Stadium would have coincided with a continued upturn in form but this hasn’t proven the case.
Payet is now a regular in the French national team set-up and may feel that the time is right for a high-profile move and the experienced playmaker would surely struggle to turn down a move to join Man United.
There is growing speculation that Mourinho may look to sell summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with the Armenian barely featuring in the first-team set-up this term, and if such a sale were to go ahead then the chances of a bid for Payet would increase significantly.
