Manchester United are set to make a move for Bayern Munich playmaker Mario Gotze as Old Trafford chief executive Ed Woodward looks to justify his position.

Woodward has come in for  a fair amount of criticism over his failure to capture significant transfer targets in recent windows and now sees the possibility of beating rivals Liverpool to the capture of Gotze as one of way of winning the fans over.

Louis van Gaal is said to be open to a move to bring in the Bayern Munich man and Gotze is said to be available with incoming Allianz Arena boss Carlo Ancelotti looking to find a buyer for the World Cup winner.

Gotze has started just 11 Bundesliga fixtures this season and the signing of Renato Sanches from Benfica, announced earlier in the week, will no doubt result in the former Borussia Dortmund man playing an even lesser role in first-team action.

Woodward is said to have missed out Sanches and has the backing of the Man United board to launch a big money bid for Gotze with Bayern Munich looking to bank as much as £40m from his sale.

Though there has been much speculation over Louis van Gaal’s future at Man United, and talk of Jose Mourinho taking over at the Premier League club is rife, Woodward will push on with moves for big summer captures regardless of who will be at the helm come the start of the 2016/17 season.

Though Gotze has struggled for playing time at Bayern Munich the cultured midfielder is still highly regarded and though Man United are likely to be without Champions League football a move to re-start his career at Old Trafford may well still appeal to the 23-year-old.

Bayern Munich paid £29m for Gotze back in July 2013 after he had greatly impressed at the Westfalenstadion, one of a number of players the German giants has snatched from Borussia Dortmund, but the pint-sized performer has failed to secure a foothold in Pep Guardiola’s side and things are unlikely to improve under Ancelotti.

The presence of Bastian Schweinsteiger at Man United could aid their push to lure Gotze and if Liverpool fail to overcome Sevilla in their Europa League final clash, and therefore fail to secure a Champions League berth themselves, then the Red Devils will feel even more confident of snapping up the Bayern Munich attacking midfielder.
