Manchester United make £50m La Liga defender their number one targetPublished November 1, 2016
Manchester United have a new number one target and it’s a defender, according to the Mirror. Despite their recent struggles in front of goal, Jose Mourinho’s priorities lie at the back. The Special One wants to shore up what he considers to be a porous defence.
Mourinho wants to recruit Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez but it will cost United a cool £50m to coax the Spanish giants to part with their prized centre-half. The natural successor to Diego Godin for Uruguay, Atletico want Gimenez to lead their defence long after Godin departs the Calderon.
United spent big in the summer and it’s unlikely that any deal could be struck with Atletico in January. However, opening negotiations in January would smooth a route towards signing the 21-year-old. It’s likely to spell the end of Chris Smalling’s time as a United player. Mourinho doesn’t appear to trust him.
Daley Blind could also face the chop. Eric Bailly, currently injured, has quickly established himself as the club’s best central defender since his £30m move from Villarreal in the summer. Have a look at a Gimenez clearance below.
