Manchester United line-up sensational move to sign Real Madrid pair: Jose Mourinho preparing big money Bernabeu raid
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has earmarked two stars of his former club Real Madrid as he looks to strengthen his squad in the summer. According to Don Balon, the Portuguese wants to bring both Raphael Varane and Toni Kroos to Old Trafford.
United have endured a tough first season under Mourinho, who replaced his former mentor Louis van Gaal last year. Despite winning the EFL Cup against Southampton last week, the Red Devils are struggling to reach the top four and the qualification places for the Champions League.

Saturday’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Bournemouth leaves them sixth in the Premier League, three points of neighbours Manchester City in fourth, though they have a game in hand. The lack of Champions League football in recent years has not stopped big names signing for the club, with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic among those to arrive with Mourinho.
But it remains to be seen if either Kroos or Varane would be willing to make a possible step down, given that both players were involved heavily in winning the Champions League with Los Blancos last term.
Mourinho worked with France international defender Varane during his stint at Real, having brought him to the Santiago Bernabeu as a teenager in 2011. The pair were known to have a good relationship and have been linked with a reunion ever since Mourinho departed for Chelsea in 2013. Kroos, though, arrived a year after that.
Both players would plug gaps in the Red Devils first team. While Eric Bailly has impressed during his first season, the defence has looked shaky at times this season and Varane would be a definite upgrade on Chris Smalling. Pogba and Ander Herrera have shown their class at times this season, too, but there have been some games where United have lost control deep in the centre of the pitch, needing the introduction of ageing stars like Michael Carrick or Bastian Schweinsteiger to regain it. Kroos would certainly add more composure and intelligence on the ball.
One way into this deal could be by using goalkeeper David de Gea as bait. Real’s past interest in the player is well known, having almost signed him in 2015, only for a paperwork malfunction to scupper the deal. Don Balon claim the LaLiga leaders are intent on signing him again, though United have maintained they do not want to sell him.
It is definitely true that Manchester United will be one of the busiest clubs in next summer’s transfer window again. But it is unclear if they can sell their ambition to these two Real Madrid Galacticos.
