With the Red Devils fringe players all linked with transfers away from the club, Jose Mourinho has targeted Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, Ajax forward Kasper Dolberg and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof as potential successors in a triple swoop.
Rated in the region of a combined £130m, the world-class talents would offer a serious upgrade to an unbalanced squad currently lagging way behind the Premier League frontrunners in sixth position.
The Manchester Evening News claim Frenchman Griezmann is at the forefront of the Portuguese’s thinking as Wayne Rooney moves towards the end of his time at Old Trafford.
United’s all-time record goalscorer has been linked with moves to Everton and a host of Chinese Super League clubs by a variety of sources, and may move this summer in search of regular game-time.
His place in the United forward-line could well be taken by Griezmann, who has struck 71 goals in 135 games for Atleti since joining from Real Sociedad in 2014.
The 25-year-old is believed to have a release-clause of around £75m at the Estadio Vicente Calderon, and has developed into one of the deadliest strikers in Europe since the switch.
Danish sensation, Dolberg, meanwhile, is another who the MEN claim is attracting interest from Red Devils chiefs after a stunning start to the season for Ajax.
12 goals in 29 games has brought the 19-year-old to the attention of numerous elite sides, with United joined in the chase by the likes of Borussia Dortmund.
His addition could compensate for the expected loss of out-of-favour winger Ashley Young, who the BBC (via the Telegraph) suggest will look to depart the north-west giants in the coming months.
Ex-England winger Young has grown tired at the lack of opportunity at Old Trafford, and has drawn admiring glances from both the Premier League and China.
Italian flop Darmian could join Young in quitting Mourinho’s men, writes the Daily Star, with the Azzurri international even going as far as to scout out accommodation in Milan after links with high-flying Internazionale.
The switch would be the first part of Mourinho’s expected defensive shake-up, as the former Chelsea boss eyes fresh blood in the problem position.
One player who has been constantly linked to United is Swede Lindelof, who saw a multi-million deal break down as talks between Benfica and Red Devills chiefs stalled.
He is still on the Old Trafford radar, per the Times, but a summer move seems much more likely as time ticks down towards the deadline.
