Manchester United dealt blow in race to sign world-class LaLiga star
Manchester United’s chances of signing Antoine Griezmann have taken a hit with the news Diego Simeone will be staying at Atletico Madrid this summer, per the Daily Star.
Griezmann, 26, is reportedly United’s prime transfer target this summer and the club had been confident of signing him. But Simeone confirmed he will be staying at the Spanish side as they head into a new stadium next season.
The Frenchman reportedly has an £86million buyout clause in his contract, which can still be met, but the relationship between him and Simeone could persuade him to stay in the Spanish capital.
United are in need of attacking reinforcements this summer, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney likely to depart Old Trafford.
Any hopes of signing top level players this summer, Griezmann or otherwise, may well depend on Champions League qualification, and United can clinch it with victory in the Europa League final against Ajax on Wednesday.
