Lukaku, 24, was believed to be close to signing for Antonio Conte’s side throughout the summer, but after United agreed a £75million fee for the striker much to everyone’s surprise, the Premier League champions have been left licking their wounds despite making a last-ditch bid to hijack the deal to take him to Old Trafford. Although it has not quite gone through yet, Lukaku has said his goodbyes to Everton and even given an interview stating his desire to impress with the Red Devils.

Having all but completed a deal to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea’s noses, Manchester United are looking to frustrate the Blues even further by snatching Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko from their grasp.

Another major summer target for Conte has been Bakayoko, the all action 22-year-old Monaco midfielder. He was one of the main players to impress in the Principality last season, helping his team to the Champions League semi finals and the Ligue 1 title. A number of clubs are tracking him, but Chelsea have been confident of securing his services, with Nemanja Matic looking set for a reunion with United boss Jose Mourinho.

But the Daily Express claim Mourinho has turned his attention towards Bakayoko and has agreed a £35million fee. The Portuguese coach is believed to want a new central midfield partner for Paul Pogba, one with a defensive mindset to allow the current most expensive player in the world to express himself this season.

That could leave Conte on the brink, with reports already suggesting the Italian is unhappy at the Lukaku situation. A striker is his main priority, as he looks to replace Diego Costa, a player he has already informed is not part of his plans at Stamford Bridge this season and will likely be sold. A return to Atletico Madrid looks likely, despite a transfer ban forbidding them to register any player until January.

Mourinho’s plans are in full swing, though. Like Conte there had been rumours he was on a collision course with his bosses over the lack of perceived transfer activity, with only Swedish defender Victor Lindelof having arrived, from Benfica, until this week. But with Lukaku, apparently Bakayoko and Inter winger Ivan Persic all set to sign in the coming weeks, this year really could be the year United return to the top of English and European football, with Champions League football also on the horizon.
