Manchester United 'in advanced talks' for Serie A midfielder
Manchester United’s long-standing interest in Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman looks set to be resurrected, with the Daily Star on Sunday reporting the two clubs are in advanced talks over the Dutchman.
Strootman has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since before Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. While his talent is undeniable, injuries have a huge negative impact on his career, stopping him from getting consistent playing time for a number of years.
At 27, Strootman is now at his peak and Jose Mourinho may have identified him as the perfect man to replace Michael Carrick, with the former England man’s contract running out in the summer.
Roma will be loathed to loose Strootman, but it is likely the Red Devils will be willing to meet their £35million asking price.
Strootman would find competition in the shape of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba, who have performed well at times this season. But if he does join United, he may miss out on Champions League football again next season, with the club currently sixth in the Premier League.
