Other sources have since confirmed that Manchester City will pay £42m for the 22-year-old as Pep Guardiola seeks to strengthen a leaky defence inherited from former boss Manuel Pellegrini.

The likes of Eliaquim Mangala, Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany struggled with form and fitness last season and it’s no surprise that the mega-rich club have spent big to resolve the issue.
