Man United draw up stellar £160m trio wish-list: Man City goal-machine, Real Madrid playmaker and world-class keeper on Jose Mourinho radar
Manchester United have drawn up a list of targets ahead of the summer, some of which could be hugely surprising as Jose Mourinho aims to step up his overhaul of the club this summer.
The Portuguese took over from Louis van Gaal last year with the Red Devils in the midst of their worst spell in years. Since the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after winning a 13th Premier League title, United have not won another, only qualifying for the Champions League once and lifting the FA Cup.
Despite spending heavily on the likes of Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, as well as luring Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer last summer, Mourinho’s impact has not been immediate. He added the League Cup to his impressive trophy haul and could win the Europa League, but qualification for the Champions League through finishing in the top four is looking unlikely.
Another big transfer window is expected at Old Trafford. The first name on the three-player list is Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Slovenian international Oblak is seen as the perfect replacement for seemingly Real Madrid-bound David de Gea. United are reluctantly set to allow de Gea to join Real two years after a potential move broke down due to a paperwork issue. Oblak is the last man in Europe’s best defence, and according to The Independent, would cost £40million.
The Sun reports possibly the most out-there rumour of the summer. United are in need of attacking options, with Ibrahimovic having suffered a bad injury after scoring 28 goals this term. Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero could be on the move after a tough first season under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. The former Barcelona boss is said to be frustrated with the Argentine’s work rate and that could open up the possibility of a £55million switch across Manchester, the opposite direction fellow countryman Carlos Tevez took in 2009.
Finally, Goal say United could look to add a dynamic playmaker to their squad in the form of unsettled Real Madrid star James Rodriguez. The Colombian has struggled to assert himself at the Santiago Bernabeu since Carlo Ancelotti was sacked a year after he joined from Monaco in 2014. Despite impressing at the World Cup that year and in his first season in Spain, both Ancelotti’s successors Rafa Benitez and Zinedine Zidane have shunned him and he could be on the lookout for regular first team action in the off season. The report suggests Mourinho wants him for £65million, representing an £8million loss for Los Blancos.
