Man United & Arsenal in secret talks to complete shock swap deal: Mourinho & Wenger close to reaching agreement on big summer dealPublished March 14, 2017
Manchester United and Arsenal are involved in exploratory talks with regards to the future of Emirates Stadium star Mesut Ozil.
Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho is keen on signing Mesut Ozil, having worked with the German during their shared time at Real Madrid, and Arsenal are beginning to reach acceptance with regards to the likely exit of the playmaker.
Ozil will have just a year to run on his current contract once the season ends and the 28-year-old has no intention of signing a new deal and has made a point of stating that his future is not tied into that of manager Arsene Wenger, who could leave the club this summer himself.
Though Arsenal would prefer to sell Ozil to a side overseas they may consider offers from Premier League rivals, with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna to name four recent examples of this, and a move to Manchester United is looking entirely plausible.
Skipper Wayne Rooney may well be on his way to China this summer and Ozil may be seen as an ideal replacement for the long-serving player.
Ozil has come in for a fair amount of criticism lately due to a series of below par displays and statistics back up his lack of effectiveness on the field of play.
The Arsenal man hasn’t netted in 11 matches in all competitions and has managed just four Premier League assists all season having collected a league high of 19 in 2015/16.
Arsene Wenger has long been linked with an interest in centre-back Chris Smalling and it’s believed that the two clubs may look to complete a swap deal, with the North London side to receive a cash sum on top of the player exchange.
Wenger has not been overly impressed by the displays put in by summer signing Shkodran Mustafi and will look to bring in Londoner Smalling to boost his options at the back.
Smalling, signed from Fulham in 2010, has started just nine Premier League fixtures this season and may well jump at the chance of a move to the Emirates Stadium.
Prior to Mourinho’s arrival Smalling was a key performer but the arrival of Eric Bailly has effective his standing in the first-team set-up.
