Man City CEO claims Juventus star wants to play for Pep GuardiolaPublished October 19, 2016
A new story broken by Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano reveals that one of the best defenders in world football offered his services to the club in the summer. Leonardo Bonucci is a rock at the back for both Juventus and Italy. He’s also a big fan of Pep Guardiola. It was this admiration which compelled him to give the head honchos at City a buzz.
With quotes reported by the Mirror, Soriano told Barcelona-based radio station (he was the vice president of FC Barcelona for five years) RAC1 about the near-signing: “At the moment there are a lot of players that want to play under Pep. The Italian central defender [Leo] Bonucci wants to play for him and he called us.”
After this chat with Bonucci, Soriano had one other person to call before booking a flight to Turin: Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici. “I called the Juventus sporting director and he told me they didn’t want to sell,” Soriano concludes. “There ended the story!”
It’s an interesting reminder of the added bonus of having a brilliant tactician like Guardiola on board. The very best players will be keen to play under him because it gives them the opportunity to not only win things but also to improve themselves.
With Guardiola saying he would leave the door open to Messi coming to the Etihad (stop the presses!), Soriano clarified that City were only interested in two Barcelona players in the summer:”It was brought to our attention that both want to play every game and weren’t happy with the situation. From there we talked with Barca and we asked if they wanted to sell one. Bravo ended up coming.”
