Liverpool fans in meltdown after Jurgen Klopp reveals plans to play James Milner at left-back after missing out on Leicester’s Ben Chilwell [Best Tweets]Published July 31, 2016
Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter in their droves, with the revelation that midfielder James Milner could be asked to play as emergency full-back next season.
Speaking at a Press conference during the Reds’ pre-season tour of the US, Jurgen Klopp revealed that he wasn’t necessarily looking at bolstering his full-back options, with Milner being able to play in that position if needed.
Klopp’s rather bizarre revelation came in the aftermath of Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign Leicester full-back Ben Chilwell.
The Merseyside club had been linked with the talented 19-year-old for a number of months and it was thought that the defender would make a move to Anfield this summer.
But it is understood that Liverpool had a £7m bid rejected, with Leicester holding out for a fee in the region of £10m, a price which Klopp deemed too expensive, for a player with such limited top flight experience.
Klopp’s decision to not come back with another offer for the England youngster, led to Chilwell signing a new contract at the King Power, and it looks as though the Liverpool boss is content with his defensive options ahead of the new season.
Whilst Liverpool have added more strength in depth to their defence with the signings of Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan, a full-back was considered to be an area which needed strengthening.
Judging by the comments on Twitter, Liverpool fans are unhappy about the prospect of James Milner’s new position and would prefer their club sign a natural defender rather than rely on ‘Mr Reliable’ to fill the void when needed.
