Liverpool to break the bank to sign highly-rated defender
Following the £36million signing of Sadio Mane last summer, Liverpool are again willing to spend a record transfer fee on a Southampton star with Virgil van Dijk targeted, per the Daily Star.
The Reds have made a habit of poaching talent from the Saints, with Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren all previously swapping St Mary’s for Anfield.
Van Dijk, 25, has been in excellent form this season and is reportedly attracting interest from the Premier League big boys, with the Star claiming Chelsea are also monitoring his situation.
The Dutchman is currently sidelined for the rest of the season with injury but will still command a fee in the region of £50million, which Southampton could look to reinvest.
Claude Puel will want to buck the trend set under both Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman by keeping his best players this summer and looking to build for next season.
Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, must look at his defence with another promising season threatening to end poorly. The Reds’ Champions League hopes suffered at the weekend with a 2-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace.
