Premier League Goal of the Month named for DecemberPublished January 13, 2017
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s sublime volley against Sunderland has been named December’s Premier League Goal of the Month.
The Armenian attacking midfielder beat off stiff competition from the likes of Alexis Sanchez to win the impressive award, and was presented with his trophy at the north-west club’s Carrington training ground on Friday morning.
With 86 minutes on the clock at Old Trafford and the game poised at 2-0 to the hosts, the ex-Borussia Dortmund man stretched to meet Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s cross and propel the ball with his heel into the corner of the net.
While some will complain that the effort was half-a-yard offside- and in truth, it probably was- the sheer audacity of the finish makes it a worthy winner.
United went on to win the match 3-1, with Sunderland’s Fabio Borini netting a brilliant injury-time consolation for David Moyes’ side.
Days later, Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud emulated Mkhitaryan in scoring a remarkably similar scorpion-kick in the the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Thankfully for sponsors, Carling, though, the Frenchman’s strike came on January 1, sparing the renowned brewery an incredibly tough decision as to which goal was better.
