Five Man United alternatives to £100m Paul Pogba transferPublished July 24, 2016
Manchester United’s pursuit of Paul Pogba looks like it will be anything but simple.
Juventus are reluctant to let their star player leave without receiving a world record fee, and although it is to be believed that United are working on a deal which the Serie A side will find acceptable, there is a feeling that this deal could end up turning into a transfer saga reminiscent of David De Gea’s failed move to Real Madrid last season.
United boss Jose Mourinho, has recently said that his side will not be held to ransom by any club, and has claimed that he has other targets in mind, should a move for Pogba fail to materialise.
With that in mind, we at Free Bets, look at five alternative midfielders that Man United can look to sign, should they fail in a bid to bring Paul Pogba to Old Trafford.
Blaise Matuidi (PSG)
The French midfielder has long been linked with a move to United, and it is understood that Jose Mourinho will turn to the 29-year-old, if he is unable to land Matuidi’s France teammate, Paul Pogba.
The PSG midfielder is reportedly allowed to leave the club, with the Ligue 1 champions demanding a fee of around £20m.
Further reports have recently claimed that the ‘Special One’ is considering signing Matuidi, irrespective of the Pogba deal, though this looks doubtful at this moment in time.
Nemanja Matic (Chelsea)
The Serbian international has been linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge, after Chelsea completed the signing of N’Golo Kante last week.
If Matic were to leave West London, then a reunion with his former boss could be on the cards, and Mourinho would hope to get the 27-year-old playing at the level he was at two years ago, when he was considered one of the best defensive-midfielders in Europe.
Toni Kroos (Real Madrid)
The German midfielder, who impressed many in France this summer, has always been keen on a Premier League move at some point during his career, and the player may get his wish sooner than expected, with City and United both taking a great interest in the midfielder’s situation at Real Madrid.
The European champions value Kroos at £38million, and if Untied were to enter the race to sign the German ace, then that could spark a bidding war in Manchester.
Joe Allen (Liverpool)
Reports in the British press in the last week have claimed that Mourinho is considering a move for out of favour Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen.
The Welshman impressed many at Euro 2016, and there will be many clubs after the 26-year-old’s signature.
Stoke have recently had a £13m bid accepted for Allen, and there seems to have been no action from United so far to back up claims of their reported interest.
James Rodriguez (Real Madrid)
After seeing little game time under Zinedine Zidane at Madrid, another name to be thrown into the Old Trafford mix is that of James Rodriguez. The Colombian superstar is keen to leave the Santiago Bernabeu after his frustrating season in Spain, and the 25-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks.
While Paris Saint-Germain remains his most likely destination, with reports suggesting a fee has been agreed, don’t rule out a late counter offer from United
