Chelsea in secret talks to complete amazing £82m striker signing: Deal in place to bring in cultured forwardPublished September 8, 2016
Chelsea are hot on the heels of Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann with the two clubs believed to have reached an understanding on a deal to bring in the French international next summer.
Antonio Conte has earmarked a move for the 25-year-old and the La Liga side are resigned to losing the former Real Sociedad man sooner rather than later and are ready to sell to the Blues on one condition.
Brazilian born Spanish international Diego Costa was tipped to leave Stamford Bridge over the summer but a good run of form at the start of the season ended such speculation but the former Vicente Calderon man is said to be interested in a move back to Atletico Madrid.
This has led to the two sides discussing the possibility of a player plus cash deal, worth an estimated £82m, that would see Griezmann and Costa move in opposite directions.
Conte is looking to build his attack around a forward of Griezmann’s quality and has been backed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and if Champions League football is secured for 2017/18 then moves to bring in the Atletico Madrid man become all that more likely.
Griezmann has proven a big hit since moving to the Spanish capital, bagging 25 goals in his first season under Diego Simeone’s leadership and netted 32 times last term.
He then went on to impress a great deal at the Euro 2016 finals, finishing the tournament as top-scorer, scoring six times.
Costa is something of a fan favourite at Chelsea but is said to be homesick and Griezmann is arguably a better fit for Conte’s style of play.
